INTERVIEW: SMOOVGROOVS | HGB

homegrownblends:

This is the 3rd “episode” of HGB member interviews. On this third installment, one of our youngest/newest crew members, SmoovGroovs, gets the spotlight. He cut his teeth as a DJ in San Diego while he was a student at SDSU, but is now back in his hometown of San Jose. He chops it up about his music and DJ-ing.

Goldenchyld - Oversmash [SmoovGroovs re:work] by SmoovGroovs

Here it is folks, just like I promised. Let me give you a little project rundown for those who don’t know. First off, major daps going out to the big dawg GOLDENCHYLD of THE BANGERZ for doin’ what he does. This project wouldn’t have been possible without his talent and work. So, I totally forgot that “THE PRELUDE” project featuring Don Prahfit, DJ Ace, & Goldenchyld included all the instrumentals in the download package. I took a listen to Oversmash and instantly was inspired to create that type of sound. Not having any production experience in creating this sound, the idea struck me to do a re:work, basically use the original beat and musically paint over it with the SmoovGroovs steelo, as a segue for me to get into this style of production. I brought up the idea to GC and he was super on board with it!

I laid down all the synths, textures, leads, and some vocal skratches on the hook. Oh, and all the FX were tweeked live. This project helped me get through some personal $hit at the beginning of the year, as you can hear it in my wailing synth leads and the overall tone of the re:work. Hope y’all can dig it! Feel free to share it, download it, slap it on your iPOD, whateva!

Eric Lau on imperfection.

I was put on to Eric Lau in early 2010. This Producer/DJ from London comes super clean on the beats (hiphop.soul.neo-soul). His production style is characterized by heavy drums, often unrecognizable samples, and a mixture of live sequenced instrumentation. In this video he says, “when you use a computer to program stuff, everything is completey straight, but what’s really beautiful to me, is when you get the geometry right, but it’s more hand drawn, so you get imperfection, which makes it more real….” I must say, I used to heavily rely on the computer to make the beat perfect, but ideas of “imperfection” give the music a more natural feel, which to me is what it should be about.

Peep more on Eric Lau.

The music Gods were definitely with me today. As I was at the jayo, my ears were telling me to play some Kings of Convenience, so I said okay….let me revisit one of my favorites from them, Misread. So now, i’m over here at Bucks (starbucks) and my ears catch the sound of a clean jazz/soul guitar over some BoomBap type drums. I look up at the screen, and to my luck, it’s another Kings of Convenience joint! I think the music Gods are tellin’ me to do something with one of their tracks…a remix, a flip?! We shaaallll seeeee.
